The Advancement of Graphic Design


In the age of technological growth, the use of graphic designers in contriving marketing schemes have become exigently imperative. Especially now that schemes have migrated towards media platforms. Policies are no longer traditional, as the old have become tedious. Colorless.

Their duties demand not only knowledge, but inbred talent. A job that is reflecting of raw vigour.

What they customarily do is, meet with clients or the art director to determine the scope of a project; use digital illustration, photo editing software and layout software to create designs; create visual elements such as logos; design layouts and select colours, images and typefaces to use; present design concepts to clients or art directors; incorporate changes recommended by clients or art directors into final designs; review designs for errors before printing or publishing them.

Primarily, graphic designers thrive to create the distinguished fusion of art and technology as to communicate ideas through images.

As for the history of this esteemed profession, one may argue that it had unfolded in days of old. Dating back to a bygone age. Stating that the drawings found on the walls of ancient caves are conceivably a form of ‘graphics’.

Jump forth on to the 1900’s, you will find that posters became a form of expression. They would contain slogans that are short and to the point, adjoined with a graphic to set the tone, such as the ‘We can do it’ poster. Succeeding the days of posters, came the television. A time that has proven to be prosperous, as advertisements showed paramount popularity.

Cultures had major influence on the graphics and designs of posters and all other existing media elements back in the day (1970’s). Japan in particular. Symmetry became fundamental, coloring had to show harmony and icons would be included within the center of the design.

The 1980’s came after bearing gifts. As computers were affordable, allowing everyone a piece of the cake. Especially that Microsoft had introduced windows, which has demonstrated itself to be an easily operated OS. Apple also made a noteworthy development which had supplemented the reach of graphic designers. They had released MacPaint for Macintosh computers. Making a great contribution to the industry, since the development had proved to allow users to easily design graphics. Such as with the mouse or the use of a graphics tablet.

Photoshop 1.0 made its approach in the 1990’s. Although initially it was exclusive for the Macintosh, still this tool had expanded the capacity of designers. Afterwards came the 2000’s, extending the frontier of graphic designing. Now, designers are able to carry on their tasks wherever and whenever, seeing that devices have become portable. Facilitating their duties as due to the advancement of technology which has aided the advancement of graphic design.
